The First United Methodist Church in Sapulpa hosted its annual Chili Cookout at McGoy Park., located at 139 N. Leonard Street, on Tuesday, October 15th. Volunteers from the church and members of the McGoy family served local residents, delicious home-made chili. One of the volunteers said that everyone was welcome to receive a free meal, “Even if you have two refrigerators full of food or don’t have a roof over your head.”
During the summer, The Church, in partnership with Booker T. Washington Coffee Stop, hosts a free hamburger and hot dog meal weekly at McGoy Park. The name of this event is the “Cross and Flame Road Show,” which is overseen by Gerry Holmes.
Heather Graham said the mission of these events is to “take our ministries outside the walls of the church, to feed the hungry, provide an opportunity for fellowship with the community, and to establish the basis for some low-pressure evangelism.”
McGoy park has become a “home base” and a place “where food and fellowship are shared, where friendships are renewed every summer, and where everyone is welcome.” First United Methodist Church has held this event since 2009 and has served 18,325 hamburgers, 9,630 hot dogs, 19,525 bags of chips, and 860 gallons of lemonade.
The Scripture, Hebrews 13:1-2 guides the church’s efforts at McGoy Park. It reads, “Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
