Sapulpa suffered its second loss of the season on Friday against Grove, and the second loss in a row on the road.
While next week’s game against Capitol Hill is also on the road, we’re confident we’ll see a win with this one, and according to Chieftain Television commentator Tanner Gregory, it’s essentially a clean slate for Sapulpa varsity football.

The loss was surprising, given that despite the final score of 21-7, Gregory says that Sapulpa “dominated” the game offensively.
“Sapulpa had 320 yards of offense compared to Grove, who only had 148 yards,” he told Sapulpa Times.
According to Gregory, Sapulpa’s three turnovers inside the 10-yard line made the difference for Grove. “One of those turnovers led to a 98-yard fumble returned for a touchdown with 15 seconds left to go in the first half,” he said. “They were starting a freshman QB (Traeson Shaw) in place of the starter, who is injured. He played well for the most part, but that’s a tough spot to be in as a freshman getting your first start on the road. “
Gregory added that these reps for Shaw should prove valuable as the Chieftains start conference play next week.
Defensively, Gregory said the Chieftains “played great but were put in some really tough situations.”
“They only allowed 14 points and one of those touchdowns came off a trick play by Grove,” he said. “The other touchdown happened when Sapulpa had a punt blocked and gave Groves’ offense great field position.”
Some notables on Defense:
- Jayce McIntosh had a great game defensively and had a big interception in the first half.
- Sequoyah Hall also forced a fumble, which Deshaun Koch recovered.
The Sapulpa Chieftains’ record will reset as they start district play. Gregory reminded us that the Chieftains are almost exactly where they were last year at this time. “(The Chieftains) went on to win four games in a row as district play started,” he said.
The Chieftains will play at Capitol Hill this Friday and return home for a homecoming game against Bartlesville in the first week of October.
