Sapulpa Public Schools has alerted parents of High School, Junior High, and Bartlett Academy that students of those schools will be in Distance Learning through Friday as they work to complete the process of bringing students back following a natural gas odor situation earlier this week.
According to school officials, “the problem on Wednesday was isolated to a classroom furnace in the High school and not a result of new construction.”
The school also says that repairs have been completed and tested and they’re allowing the heating system to cycle for the next 24 hours, presumably to ensure that no other issues arise.
They said they expect in-person learning to resume on Monday, December 16th. Their full statement is at the end of this story.
Oklahoma Natural Gas reached out to Sapulpa Times to say that although this incident was with the school’s furnace and not related to its natural gas service, they wanted to take the time to remind everyone about how to handle a natural gas emergency.
“Safety is our top priority, so we want to remind everyone that if they have a natural gas emergency or smell natural gas, they should leave the area immediately and then call 911 and 800-458-4251,” said Chad Previch, Public Relations Manager for ONG. “In addition, they should call 811 or submit a line locate request at OKIE811.org at least 48 hours before starting any digging project, excluding the date of notification, weekends and holidays.”
Dear Chieftains,
We appreciate your continued understanding as our high school and junior high worked through a natural gas issue. The problem on Wednesday was isolated to a classroom furnace in the High School and not a result of new construction. Repairs have been completed and Oklahoma Natural Gas has rigorously tested the system and it is operating normally.
Sapulpa High School and Sapulpa Junior High School will remain in Distance Learning on Friday, December 13, as we allow the heating system to cycle for the next 24 hours. Students should log into Schoology to complete assignments. Middle School athletes will report to the Middle School for first hour and Bartlett Academy will also observe Distance Learning.
At this time, we expect in-person learning to resume on Monday, December 16.
