The City of Sapulpa has agreed to purchase the Sapulpa Herald building at 16 S. Park, following approval by the Sapulpa City Council on Monday, June 6th. The purchase price was $225,000.
The City has been interested in the property as part of its upcoming alleyway redesign, which is slated to begin this summer. The new design will include a total makeover of the alley between Water and Park Streets on either side of Dewey. The lot where the Herald building is designated in the Downtown Master Plan as “proposed infill,” which is a term used for developing “vacant or underutilized parcels.” City officials and designers believe the space would benefit more as a walkable portion of the alley.
The Sapulpa Herald, which has been established in that building for over 100 years, will move to a new location, although that address has not yet been made public. Herald Publisher Darren Sumner did say that the Herald would be purchasing a new building, new press, and new computers.
“Sapulpa Herald is excited to move into a new facility after serving the community for 107 years at 16 S Park,” Sumner said. “(We’re) ready to watch City begin the transformation of downtown Sapulpa.”
