Crowds that were described as “Route 66 Blowout-level” were downtown on Friday evening as Sapulpa kicked off its inaugural Cinco De Mayo celebration.
The latest event from the Kickin’ 66 Committee, which was formed after the Route 66 Christmas Chute in order to capitalize on the trajectory that downtown Sapulpa was experiencing.
Thomas Longacre, one of the organizers for this particular event, said he “so proud of the Sapulpa community” that not only turned out in droves, but helped with putting the event on in the first place.
“The support was amazing and the event could not have gone better,” he said. “Everything worked out so well. The Luchadors, the dancers, the music, and the food was all next level.”
One of several highlights were the luchador wrestlers, which performed their first show earlier and made it mostly a comedy routine, beginning with a clown, then a wrestler dressed as a chicken, and more still, until eight wrestlers total were in the ring performing body slams and sling shots on the ropes in between the slapstick antics of the clown.
Later that evening, a second round turned the comedy into an action-packed real wrestling event, with more serious moves and pyrotechnics.
In addition to the luchadors, Cinco De Mayo had a number of other authentic Mexican staples, including a dancing troupe and mariachi band. The fun lasted well into the evening, with the music and crowd not dispersing well until after the official end time of 10:00 PM.
The Kickin’ 66 Committee has no events planned for June, due to the upcoming Chamber Golf Tournament, but July will bring events back in full force with the Petunia Fest. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
