Friday was the grand opening of the latest in entertainment for Sapulpa: Chuck-It Axe Co.—which is exactly what it sounds like: axe-throwing.
Located at 12 S. Water, the newly-renovated space is bound to be a hit for those looking for something different to do in a downtown that finally seems to be finding its place again after years of watching its residents, restaurants and entertainment options go to other nearby suburbs and cities.
In an interview with Sapulpa Times, owner Amanda Stephens decided to open the shop after retiring from 18 years at Freedom Elementary as a teacher’s assistant, and though it’s not a typical choice for a retirement plan, it stems from a very common desire: spending more time with family.
“We wanted to bring something new and exciting to the community,” she said. “But the main reason was because of my grandchildren. I wanted to have a little more freedom and spend a little more time with them.”
Those desires led to acquiring and renovating what had previously been a private club called The Locker Room, and just two months later, they’re opening the doors to what Stephens describes as a “family-friendly environment” for quality entertainment.
Part of the unique draw for Chuck-It is the variety of games available to play. In most axe-throwing locations, the player would be throwing an axe at what is essentially a large slice of a tree, usually painted to look something resembling a dart board. Some slices have multiple games painted onto them. At the new location, the “target” is displayed on the large wooden wall using a projector, and it can be a traditional bulls-eye game, or one of the other games, such as tic-tac-toe, connect-four, and even a zombie apocalypse-style game.
Stephens says the Chuck-It team wouldn’t have been able to pull the new endeavor off if not for the support of their friends and family and the community. “That’s why it was so important for us to be located downtown,” she said. Chuck-It also offers military, first-responder and teacher discounts when they show a valid ID. The company’s adoration for these service groups is obvious by the flags hanging up in the building.
“Each of these men and women give of themselves everyday, taking time away from their homes and families,” Stephens said. “This was just a simple way for us to show our support and say ‘thank you’ for all they do for our communities.”
Chuck-It Axe Co. is open during the evenings on Thursday through Sunday, and has six lanes that hold a total of 24 people. Reserve your spot at online by visiting chuckitaxco.com or calling 918-347-9173
