Chieftains, Sandites Rivalry goes back 89 years

On Friday, Sapulpa and Sand Springs will line up across from each other for their 89th meeting on the football field. According to Sand Springs Leader records, Sapulpa holds a 45-38-5 overall record since 1922. Here are some highlights:

1922: Sapulpa wins first meeting 36-0.
1935: The teams tied 0-0.
1936-38: SS won all 3 games and held Sapulpa scoreless.
1941-43: SS won all three games and held Sapulpa to only 7 points.
1950: Sapulpa won 46-7 in their only undefeated season.
1962: The teams fought to a 0-0 tie again.
1971-75: Sapulpa won 5-straight games.
1989: Sapulpa blanked SS 31-0.
1990-93: SS won 4-straight.
1997: SS beat Sapulpa twice in one season, beating them in the regular season and in the playoffs.
2001-2005: Sapulpa won 5-straight games, including a 60-19 route in 2002.
2010-2012: Sapulpa won 2 of the 3 games but all 3 games were decided by only 7 points.
2014: SS won the last meeting 35-13.
