Saturday, October 3—Students of the Sapulpa Instrumental Music Department were up before the dawn and doing last minute run a through before heading down the turnpike to their first competition of the season. They performed an exhibition show for the community the night before. The marching competition at Mustang High School is always the first time out for new freshman and the first real test for the show, music, and directors.

The Nightrider Invitational gives Sapulpa students an opportunity to compete against bands from the western half of the state as well as several from Texas. Generally these bands don’t travel to the Tulsa area so it allows students and directors to see what bands outside their normal peer group are doing in their shows.

Sapulpa fared well against a tough field of competition, earning Outstanding Visual Performance in their class and coming in 4th in class AA (Bands of America Classification), just 3/10 of a point behind Guthrie. The band ranked 15th overall in a field of 21 competitors that included such powerhouses as Southmoore, Edmond Memorial, Santa Fe & North, Westmoore, Moore and Norman.  Many Sapulpa band parents commented that the show looked great and was the best performance they’d seen this year.

Director Craig Amendt looks to this competition to set the field for the rest of the season’s contests. He commented, “I am looking forward to our continued improvement and adding the use of props this week.”The band will travel to Union High School for the Renegade Review on Saturday, October 10. There they will compete against Stillwater, Choctaw, Coweta, as well several bands from Missouri and Kansas.

Come support your Sapulpa Chieftain Marching Band at Union Stadium Saturday, October 10. Competition begins as 12 noon with Sapulpa taking the field at 12:45.
