Sapulpa Police conducted a rudimentary traffic stop for a broken brake light on Thursday, August 3rd. The incident led to the passenger being arrested as convicted felon with multiple warrants.
Officer Baylor Pittinger states that on Thursday he observed a black Chevrolet Truck with a paper tag traveling north on S.H. 66 with the driver side brake light not functioning properly.
Officer Pittinger conducted a traffic stop at 1207 S.H. 66 and made contact with the occupants of the vehicle.
The front seat passenger of the vehicle identified himself as 35-year-old Bobby Johnston. Pittinger checked the Johnston for warrants through Sapulpa Police Dispatch and they advised Johnston had warrants through Osage County, Wagoner County, Okmulgee County and the City of Sapulpa.
As Johnston was being placed in handcuffs, he asked if he could take his belongings with him, referring to a tan backpack sitting in the front seat floor board.
When searching the backpack as part of a property inventory, Pittinger discovered a black Powerline by Daisy .177 caliber BB gun. At Pittinger’s request, dispatch revealed that Johnston is a convicted felon.
Turns out that in Oklahoma, convicted felons aren’t allowed to have BB guns or pellet guns, in addition to what most citizens would see as normal firearms, including pistols, rifles and shotguns.
Johnston was arrested for carrying a firearm under Oklahoma Statute 21-1283(A).
Johnston’s other warrants included:
- Washington County – Possession of Stolen Vehicle
- Creek County – Unlawful Possession of CDS with intent to Distribute
- Wagoner County – Assault and Battery upon a Police Officer
- Washington County – Possession of Stolen Vehicle – AFC 2 or more Felonies
