Dancing Skeleton Meadery opens on Main Street, live music on Friday

Because it’s on the side of the Main Street Shopping Center, which houses longtime tenants like Subway and Little Caesar’s, you might think a place like Dancing Skeleton Meadery is “off the beaten path,”—and you’d be right. But somehow, the odd location fits the entire theme of Sapulpa’s new meadery.

Mead, which is a wine made from honey instead of grapes, is the primary draw of the new craft winery located at 609b S. Main Street, but it’s not the only offering.

“We also offer regular wines made from grapes, and craft beer,” said owner Alex Long, while explaining his business to a group of Sapulpa Chamber ambassadors on Friday morning.

“I actually got the idea from the liquor store across the street,” he said. “I bought some mead off the shelf, and thought it tasted great.” He began researching, but couldn’t find it hardly anywhere. Turns out the idea of making wine from fermented honey is a nearly-forgotten craft, but it’s making a comeback, and Sapulpa is poised to be one of the first in the state to provide award-winning craft wines, beers  and mead.

According to their website at dancingskeletonmeadery.com, “the perception is that mead is in the same category of beverages as ales and lagers,” but their mead, despite being made with honey, can have little to no sweetness, or can be considered a dessert beverage—much like wine.

Interested parties are encouraged to visit the tasting room on Main Street, or you can find Alex and his meads at upcoming events including the Rock Creek Music Festival (September 24th) and Hobson Hops in October.

Dancing Skeleton will also be hosting an acoustic set by musician Jake Hand on Friday, September 23, beginning at 7pm.
