Crossfit West of the River has been silent at Sapulpa Times lately. Fortunately, the reason isn’t that they got tired of us or—ulp—went out of business.

Quite the opposite, actually.

Rachael LaFin, one of CrossFit WOR’s trainers, clued me into their absence lately: “We have moved and expanded,” she said. CrossFit West of the River is now located at 620 E. Lee Ave, Suite A, Sapulpa, OK 73044.  The new facility is twice the size of the old one and they were going to be celebrating in a big way.

A new grand opening coming up this Friday kicks off at five-week, five-workout challenge. Athletes will be pushed to their limit competing in a combination of gymnastics, weight lifting, and endurance movements. There are no rules against age, location or gender.

CrossFit gyms everywhere will be hosting events to promote the largest CrossFit qualifying competition. All in all, 324,000 men and women will have the chance to compete against members of their own gym and those across the country and world.

They’re calling this world-wide challenge The CrossFit Open.

For some, “The Open” is the first of three phases for athletes to advance throughout the season with the ultimate goal of competing on the world stage…Go to the Games and try to become the Fittest Man, Woman, Teen, Masters or Team in the world.

For most however, it’s simply an opportunity for athletes and the community to come together and celebrate fitness and fitness goals.

CrossFit West of the River in Sapulpa will have four teams, comprised of CrossFit WOR athletes, all competing with one another to become the WOR Open Champions. To kick off this event, CrossFit WOR will be hosting a watch party on Feb 23rd, where the CrossFit Games Association will release the movements and format of the first workout.

The first workout will be called 17.1 and will be released in two versions: version 1 is RX, meaning that to compete for the higher platform you must complete all the movements and weights per what is prescribed in the RX version. If you RX, you will be competing with the world’s elite.

The second version is “Scaled.” The Scaled version is a reduced load and less challenging movements, and is designed for the majority of CrossFit athletes to compete against one another.

The next day kicks off our 5-week Friday Night Lights series.  Each Friday night, the four teams will pull together and compete in a series of heats against one another.  Athletes can dress up if they so choose to a set theme for the evening (for example: America, St. Patrick’s Day, Super Hero, 80’s, etc).

LaFin sounds excited as she describes these events, and they all hope the turnout will be good; “We would love for our community to come out and watch, cheer and join in the fun of the Open,” she said. “You do not have to be a CrossFitter, athlete or even know someone to come check us out. We would love to have you be a part of our celebration!”
